Description
Posterior anatomy of a female lower limb centers on the semimembranosus muscle as a medial hamstring, with its broad proximal tendon arising from the ischial tuberosity deep to the gluteus maximus. Distally, the semimembranosus belly lies medial to the biceps femoris and typically deeper than the semitendinosus, narrowing into a thick tendon that passes posterior to the medial femoral condyle toward the posteromedial tibia. At the knee, the muscle mass forms the medial border of the popliteal fossa, while popliteus sits deeper and more inferior on the posterior tibia, running superolaterally toward the lateral femoral condyle. Tendinous expansions are rendered in white against red muscle, clarifying attachment regions and the transition from contractile fibers to dense connective tissue. Semimembranosus matters at the posteromedial knee where its distal tendon contributes to dynamic stability in flexion and internal rotation, and where its capsular expansions blend with the oblique popliteal ligament and posterior joint capsule. Pain generators cluster here: distal hamstring tendinopathy near the posteromedial tibial condyle, snapping or irritation in deep flexion, and traction on the posteromedial corner during valgus and rotational injuries. This is a high-yield dissection target. Clear separation from biceps femoris also helps explain why common peroneal nerve irritation tracks laterally near the fibular neck, while medial symptoms more often relate to tibial nerve or capsular structures in the popliteal region.
