Description
Positioned in the lower thoracic spine, the T10 vertebra sits inferior to T9 and superior to T11, with its vertebral body forming the anterior weight-bearing column and the vertebral arch and spinous process projecting posteriorly. Lateral to the body, the pedicles and transverse processes frame the vertebral foramen, while the superior and inferior articular processes define the zygapophysial (facet) joints at the T9 to T10 and T10 to T11 levels. A thoracic intervertebral disc separates adjacent vertebral bodies, and the posterior elements align to create the characteristic thoracic kyphotic contour. Transitional features begin to appear here. T10 trends toward a larger, more lumbar-like body while retaining thoracic morphology. T10 is a practical landmark because it lies near the thoracolumbar junction where biomechanics and pathology start to shift from rib-stabilized thorax to mobile lumbar spine. The level is frequently referenced when teaching vertebral levels for spinal anesthesia landmarks and for correlating dermatomal patterns, and it is also a common site for osteoporotic compression fractures that alter anterior vertebral body height and wedge the thoracic segment. Facet orientation at this level influences rotational mobility and can help explain why pain generators differ between mid-thoracic and thoracolumbar regions. Small changes in posterior element shape matter when you plan instrumentation trajectories.
