Description
Arising from the lateral periarticular venous plexus of the knee, the inferior lateral genicular vein courses posterior to the lateral tibial condyle and immediately deep to the fibular head, where it lies close to the proximal tibiofibular joint. Superiorly, the distal femoral condyle and articular cartilage frame the joint line, while inferiorly the vein tracks along the lateral aspect of the proximal tibia before converging toward the popliteal venous system. Anterior to it, the lateral meniscus sits between femur and tibia as a crescent of fibrocartilage. Relationships matter here. A lateral view is where the inferior lateral genicular vessels stop being an abstract name and become a surgical landmark, because the fibular head and the common fibular (peroneal) nerve define the corridor for lateral knee exposure. During procedures such as posterolateral corner reconstruction, lateral meniscal repair, or open reduction and internal fixation of fibular head and proximal tibial fractures, venous bleeding from the genicular plexus can obscure the field, and injury risks increase when dissection strays too posterior toward the popliteal fossa. This depiction also supports teaching of why periarticular veins can contribute to postoperative hemarthrosis and bruising around the lateral joint line.
