Description
Posterior to the knee joint, the inferior lateral genicular vein courses along the posterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia and lateral femoral condyle, tracking with the inferior lateral genicular vessels near the capsular attachment. From its small venular tributaries around the lateral tibial plateau and adjacent synovium, it converges into a more discrete channel that runs medialward and proximally toward the popliteal fossa. Drainage is shown entering the popliteal vein deep in the fossa, posterior to the distal femur and superior to the posterior tibial region. Bony landmarks include the distal femur and proximal tibia with articular cartilage at the femorotibial joint. Attention to this vein matters because the genicular venous network is a frequent source of bleeding and postoperative hematoma during lateral knee exposures and arthroscopic portal placement, where capsular and periarticular venules can retract and obscure the field. Surgeons also use the relationship of genicular vessels to the fibular head region and the posterolateral capsule when working near structures at risk, including the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it approaches the fibular neck. Small, consistent tributaries to the popliteal vein also become relevant when mapping routes for infection spread or evaluating periarticular venous congestion after trauma or reconstructive procedures. Useful for teaching lower limb venous anatomy in gross anatomy and orthopedic modules, and for illustrating the posterior knee in surgical texts covering posterolateral approaches, meniscal repair, or ligament reconstruction. Radiology and ultrasound educators can also pair this view with Doppler discussions of popliteal fossa vessels and periarticular venous drainage patterns.
