Description
Arising from the periarticular venous network around the medial knee, the descending genicular vein tracks proximally along the distal femur, coursing on the posteromedial aspect of the knee toward its termination in the femoral vein. A posterior perspective places the vessel in relation to the posterior femoral condyles superiorly and the proximal tibia inferiorly, with the popliteal fossa lying posterior to the joint line. Articular cartilage caps the femoral and tibial surfaces, while smaller genicular venules converge toward the main channel as it ascends. Posterior visualization of the descending genicular vein matters when you need to distinguish medial genicular drainage from the popliteal vein and its tributaries, a common point of confusion in both dissection and procedural planning.
