Positioned on the posterior shoulder girdle, the suprascapular vein courses along the suprascapular fossa deep to the supraspinatus, then runs medially toward the superior border of the scapula at the suprascapular notch. A clear relationship to the transverse scapular ligament is implied at this notch, where the vein typically passes over the ligament while the suprascapular nerve passes beneath it. Inferior to this path sit the spine of the scapula and infraspinous fossa with the infraspinatus muscle, while the proximal humerus and posterior deltoid frame the lateral margin of the shoulder.
