Description
Running along the dorsolateral border of the foot, the lateral marginal vein is traced from the lateral aspect of the dorsal venous network toward the posterior margin of the lateral malleolus. Its course parallels the lateral edge of the foot, superficial to the extensor tendons on the dorsum and lateral to the tendons heading toward the fifth toe. Medially, the dorsal venous arch and accompanying dorsal metatarsal veins are implied, while laterally the vessel aligns with the contour over the cuboid and the base of the fifth metatarsal. Orientation is dorsal, with the digits distal and the ankle proximal. Clinically, this vein matters because it is a principal tributary to the small saphenous vein, a pathway often discussed when mapping superficial venous reflux or planning endovenous treatment in the posterior calf. The relationship to the lateral malleolus provides a consistent surface landmark for venipuncture and for teaching patterns of superficial thrombophlebitis after minor trauma or tight footwear.
