Description
Posterior lower-limb anatomy is presented bilaterally, centering on the arterial tree from the distal femoral artery into the popliteal artery within the popliteal fossa, then continuing as the posterior tibial artery and fibular (peroneal) artery along the deep posterior compartment of the leg. The tibia lies medially and the fibula laterally, and the fibular artery tracks closer to the fibula while the posterior tibial artery courses more medial toward the medial malleolar region. Superficial venous pathways are also indicated, including the great saphenous vein along the medial leg with additional superficial veins posteriorly, set against the bony framework of the knee (distal femur, patella, proximal tibia and fibula) and the shafts of the leg bones. Spatial relationships read cleanly. Clinically, this posterior perspective matters because it mirrors how you conceptualize flow past the knee and into the distal limb when assessing peripheral arterial disease, tibial vessel occlusions, or postoperative revascularization targets. The popliteal artery is a key landmark for trauma and knee surgery, and its distal branching helps explain why emboli or atherosclerotic lesions can selectively compromise posterior tibial or fibular artery perfusion. Palpation and Doppler assessment of the posterior tibial pulse, and anatomic planning for bypass or endovascular access, depend on these medial versus lateral courses. A practical map.
