Description
Running down the anterior aspect of the male lower limbs, the femoral artery continues from the external iliac artery distal to the inguinal ligament, then passes toward the adductor hiatus to become the popliteal artery at the level of the knee. From the popliteal fossa it divides into the anterior tibial artery, which courses into the anterior compartment on the interosseous membrane, and the posterior tibial artery, which remains more posterior and medial as it descends toward the ankle. Parallel deep veins accompany the named arteries, while the great saphenous vein tracks superficially along the medial leg and thigh to the saphenofemoral junction; the small saphenous vein lies more posterior-lateral in the calf and typically drains into the popliteal vein. Clear laterality. An anterior presentation is the most practical way to teach the relationship between the tibial vessels and the palpable landmarks clinicians use at the bedside and in theater. The anterior tibial artery becomes the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum of the foot, a standard pulse point assessed in peripheral arterial disease, acute limb ischemia, and diabetic vasculopathy. Surgeons also rely on these trajectories when planning bypass targets or flap perfusion, and when mapping safe corridors for tibial fracture fixation where vascular injury can convert a routine case into a limb-threatening emergency. Faculty will find this layout well suited for lower-limb anatomy blocks, cardiovascular physiology teaching on peripheral circulation, and exam materials that distinguish superficial venous pathways from deep paired venae comitantes. It also supports patient-facing education and clinical documentation for venous harvesting (great saphenous vein) and for Doppler ultrasound reporting of femoropopliteal and tibial flow.
