Description
Running along the medial aspect of the male lower limb, the femoral artery continues as the popliteal artery at the level of the knee and gives rise to the anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries as the vessels descend into the leg. The posterior tibial artery tracks inferiorly in the deep posterior compartment, posterior to the medial malleolus, while the fibular (peroneal) artery lies more lateral and posterior along the fibula, sending perforators toward the ankle. Superficial venous channels, including the great saphenous vein on the medial side, accompany deeper venae comitantes that closely parallel the named arteries toward the dorsum and plantar aspect of the foot. Red arterial trunks and blue venous networks converge densely around the ankle and foot. Clear landmarks. Medial projection matters because it clarifies the relationship of the posterior tibial neurovascular bundle to the medial malleolus and tarsal tunnel, a frequent site for compression neuropathy and a practical corridor for vascular access. Palpation of the posterior tibial pulse and evaluation of arterial insufficiency in peripheral arterial disease depend on understanding where this vessel becomes superficial relative to the flexor retinaculum and calcaneal region. The venous emphasis also supports teaching of calf muscle pump mechanics and why reflux in the great saphenous system contributes to medial ankle varicosities and venous stasis changes.
