Description
Anterior thoracic wall anatomy appears with the breast rendered semi-transparent over the ribcage, allowing the mammary gland to be read against the underlying ribs and intercostal spaces. Lobules and terminal duct units sit deep to the areola and radiate toward the nipple via converging lactiferous ducts, while the areola-nipple complex remains the most superficial landmark. Posterior to the glandular tissue, the pectoralis major region and chest wall contours provide orientation for the retromammary space and the typical plane of mobility between breast and fascia. Color contrast separates glandular elements from surrounding soft tissue. Clinically, this internal map matters because most breast cancers arise from the terminal duct lobular unit, and a clear depiction of ductal convergence to the nipple helps explain patterns of bloody nipple discharge, duct ectasia, and Paget disease of the nipple. The relationship of glandular tissue to the chest wall also supports teaching of surgical planes in lumpectomy and mastectomy, where dissection often follows the superficial fascia and the retromammary plane rather than the pectoral fascia itself. A key teaching point. Subareolar ductal anatomy is also central to understanding lactational mastitis and abscess formation during breastfeeding. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and reproductive system teaching, radiology correlation lectures on mammography and ultrasound where ductal and lobular terminology drives interpretation, and breast surgery or oncology materials that need a clean anatomic reference without patient photography. It also fits patient-facing education on lactation physiology, nipple discharge workup, and the basics of breast-conserving surgery when paired with simplified captions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
