Description
Plantar vascular anatomy dominates the field, with the posterior tibial artery entering the foot posterior to the medial malleolus and dividing into the medial and lateral plantar arteries that course anteriorly along the sole. The lateral plantar artery sweeps laterally and then medially across the midfoot to form the deep plantar arterial arch, from which plantar metatarsal arteries run distally toward the toes and give rise to plantar digital arteries. Superficial venous channels in blue trace back from the plantar and digital territories, converging proximally toward the medial and lateral plantar veins and then to the posterior tibial veins. Color coding keeps arterial and venous trees distinct. Clear depiction of the plantar arch matters because it is the practical map for limb salvage work in diabetes and peripheral arterial disease, where ischemic ulcers often occur at the forefoot and perfusion depends on the posterior tibial to plantar artery pathway.
