Description
Running along the posterolateral aspect of the male upper limb, the cephalic vein is traced from the dorsal venous network of the hand, crossing the anatomical snuffbox region and ascending on the lateral forearm toward the cubital fossa. Proximally, it continues along the lateral border of the biceps brachii, remaining superficial to the fascia as it approaches the deltopectoral interval near the shoulder girdle. Deep to the superficial vessels, the humerus lies superior to the radius and ulna, with metacarpals and phalanges distally, providing bony landmarks that orient the vein’s course in posterior perspective. Red arterial counterparts course more deeply, with the brachial artery dividing into radial and ulnar arteries in the forearm. Posterior rendering makes the cephalic vein’s lateral trajectory and caliber easy to teach against palpable landmarks, from the radial styloid region to the lateral epicondylar area. Clinically, this surface anatomy underpins cephalic vein cannulation at the wrist and forearm, and it also explains why the vein can be targeted or inadvertently injured during placement of lateral forearm IVs and during creation of a radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis. In the proximal arm, its relationship to the deltopectoral groove matters for cephalic vein cutdown, a classic access route when peripheral IV placement fails. Landmarks matter.
