Description
Presented in a right lateral view, the cranium is shown without the mandible, leaving the maxilla and its dentition as the inferior facial boundary. Superiorly, the frontal bone curves into the parietal region, with the coronal and squamous sutures tracing the junctions toward the temporal bone. Anteriorly the orbit is clearly defined by the frontal bone and zygomatic bone, while the zygomatic arch sweeps posteriorly to meet the temporal bone lateral to the infratemporal fossa. Below the orbital rim, the piriform aperture and anterior nasal spine frame the entrance to the nasal cavity, and the alveolar process of the maxilla carries the incisors, canine, premolars, and molars. Removing the mandible changes how you read the midface. It isolates the maxillary dentoalveolar unit and the infraorbital region, two areas that matter in Le Fort fractures, zygomaticomaxillary complex injuries, and preoperative planning for maxillofacial fixation where occlusion cannot be judged directly. The lateral perspective also keeps the zygomatic arch, lateral orbital wall, and temporal bone in one plane, which is useful when teaching the relationship between the orbit and the masticator space, and when discussing approaches that work around the arch and infratemporal region. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses to clarify cranial sutures, facial buttresses, and the bony margins of the orbit alongside the maxilla and teeth. It also fits well in oral and maxillofacial surgery texts, trauma case reports, and patient-facing education on midface fracture patterns and dental-alveolar injury.
