Description

Presented in lateral section, the adult male cranium is opened to expose the nasal cavity and paranasal air spaces, with the maxillary sinus highlighted deep to the maxilla inferior to the orbit and lateral to the nasal septum. Superior to the sinus complex, the orbit, zygomatic bone, and zygomatic arch define the anterior and lateral facial buttresses, while posteriorly the temporal bone contours the sidewall of the cranial vault. Inferiorly, the mandible with its alveolar process and dentition sits in occlusion with the maxillary teeth, placing the roots of the posterior maxillary dentition in close proximity to the sinus floor. Bone surface texture and sutural lines orient the viewer to regional anatomy without obscuring the sectioned cavities. Spatial context like this matters when you are thinking about sinonasal drainage pathways and dental-sinus relationships. Maxillary sinusitis can be odontogenic, and the proximity of molar apices to the sinus floor helps explain why periapical infection, extraction, or implant placement may lead to an oroantral communication or persistent unilateral maxillary disease.
