Description
Originating from the superficial temporal artery within the parotid region, the transverse facial artery courses anteriorly across the masseter, running inferior to the zygomatic arch and lateral to the maxilla as it approaches the buccal and zygomatic musculature. Branches track medially toward the parotid duct and the buccal fat pad, then disperse into the muscles of facial expression, including the zygomaticus major and minor and the orbicularis oris territory. Nearby, the masseter occupies the lateral mandibular ramus while the temporalis descends deep to the zygomatic arch toward the coronoid process, giving a clear muscular backdrop for the vessel’s superficial trajectory. Cutaneous layers and fascia define the plane where the artery becomes most accessible. Attention to this artery matters because it is encountered routinely in lateral midface dissection and any work around the parotid duct and anterior border of the parotid gland, where small caliber arterial bleeding can be persistent when the vessel is divided. Surgeons also consider its anastomoses with the facial artery and infraorbital artery when planning cheek flaps, facelift (rhytidectomy) planes, or managing traumatic lacerations over the zygomatic arch and masseteric region. A practical landmark. Injury risk increases when dissection strays superficial to the masseteric fascia near the duct.
