Description
Running from the pelvis into the lower limb, the lumbosacral plexus contributions converge into the sciatic nerve on the posterior aspect of the thigh, then divide near the popliteal fossa into the tibial nerve and common fibular (peroneal) nerve that wrap toward the leg and continue distally to the dorsum and plantar surface of the foot. An anteriorly oriented presentation still allows clear tracking of the fibular head region laterally, the tibial course deeper and more medial, and the cutaneous territories that accompany these trunks as they descend toward the ankle. Major bony landmarks include the femur and patella proximally, the tibia medially, the fibula laterally, and the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges distally, providing fixed reference points for the nerve paths. Blue vascular channels accompany the nerves along expected neurovascular corridors. For teaching and clinical correlation, this layout helps tie peripheral innervation to common entrapment and injury sites: the common fibular nerve is exposed where it winds around the neck of the fibula, while the tibial nerve continues through the posterior compartment toward the tarsal tunnel behind the medial malleolus. Motor and sensory deficits map cleanly from these courses, so you can relate foot drop to fibular neuropathy or plantar paresthesia to tibial nerve compression, rather than treating leg innervation as an abstract branching diagram.
