Description

Shown in anterior anatomical position, the female central nervous system is rendered with the brain superiorly and the spinal cord descending in the midline through the vertebral canal, continuing inferiorly toward the conus medullaris and cauda equina. Segmental spinal nerves exit bilaterally and course laterally as cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal nerves, with peripheral branches extending into the upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs. Cranial nerves arise from the brainstem region and distribute to the head and neck, while the sympathetic chains run longitudinally as paired paravertebral pathways flanking the vertebral column. Clear left right symmetry supports side-to-side comparison. For teaching and clinical communication, a full-body nervous system overview helps anchor dermatomes, myotomes, and common entrapment sites to their spinal levels. Linking a unilateral radiculopathy (for example L5 from a posterolateral disc herniation) to distal sensory change over the dorsum of the foot, or mapping C6 involvement to lateral forearm and thumb symptoms, becomes more intuitive when the segmental nerves are traced from cord to periphery. It also supports discussion of upper versus lower motor neuron localization, separating brain or spinal cord lesions from peripheral neuropathies. Localization is the point. Educators can drop this plate into gross anatomy and neuroanatomy lectures, OSCE station prompts on sensory testing, or patient-facing materials that explain why a “pinched nerve” in the spine can present in the hand or foot. Medical publishers will find it well suited for chapters on peripheral nerve anatomy, neurophysiology signal pathways, and neurologic examination figures where a clean, whole-body nerve map is needed without dissection clutter.
