Description
Beneath the facial skin of an adult male, the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis (epicranius), the frontalis, spans the anterior scalp over the frontal bone, sitting superficial to the periosteum and blending inferiorly with the eyebrow region. Medially, fibers interdigitate with the procerus and corrugator supercilii at the glabella, while laterally they merge with the orbicularis oculi near the superolateral orbital margin. Superiorly, the muscle thins toward the galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis), which continues posteriorly toward the occipital belly. Facial expression anatomy, clarified. Functionally, the frontalis elevates the eyebrows and produces transverse forehead rhytids by pulling the scalp anteriorly, a relationship that helps learners distinguish brow elevation from glabellar frown lines driven by corrugator and procerus. This anterior, subcutaneous presentation also aligns with aesthetic and reconstructive practice, where botulinum toxin injection patterns and complication avoidance depend on respecting the frontalis as an elevator and preserving balanced antagonism around the brow to prevent brow ptosis.
