Description
Centered on the forehead, the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis (frontalis) spreads bilaterally from the galea aponeurotica (epicranial aponeurosis) toward the superciliary arches, blending inferiorly with the skin of the eyebrows and the procerus and corrugator supercilii region. An anterior perspective places the paired orbits and frontal bone deep to the muscle, with the nasal bones and piriform aperture in the midline inferiorly. Laterally, the soft tissue outline approaches the temporal region and auricle, while the maxilla, mandible, and dentition sit inferior to the nasal cavity and anterior cranial base. The upper cervical vertebrae align posterior and inferior to the craniofacial skeleton. Clear landmarks. Functionally, the frontalis elevates the eyebrows and produces horizontal forehead rhytids, so its surface anatomy matters in both clinical examination and procedural planning. The motor supply travels in the temporal branches of the facial nerve as they cross the zygomatic arch toward the lateral forehead, a relationship that explains postoperative brow weakness after temporal lacerations and guides safe dissection planes in coronal or endoscopic brow-lift approaches. This anterior view also supports accurate placement and depth for botulinum toxin injections, where excessive inferior injection can contribute to brow ptosis by weakening frontalis over the supraorbital rim. Use it to teach scalp and facial expression muscles in gross anatomy, head and neck, and dental or medical curricula where students must correlate the galea, frontal bone, and periorbital landmarks with facial nerve function.
