Description
Arcing from the soft palate to the lateral margin of the tongue, the palatoglossus forms the palatoglossal arch (anterior pillar of the fauces) when viewed from a superior oral perspective in a male. Superiorly, the maxillary dental arcade and hard palate frame the roof of the oral cavity, while the posterior margin of the hard palate transitions into the soft palate where the palatoglossus descends inferolaterally toward the dorsum of the tongue. Medial to the palatoglossal arch lies the oropharyngeal isthmus, with the opposing arch defining the anterior boundary of the fauces. A tight anatomical corridor. Function drives the relevance of this angle: palatoglossus narrows the oropharyngeal inlet by elevating the posterior tongue and drawing the palatoglossal arches medially, coordinating bolus control at the oral to pharyngeal transition. That relationship becomes tangible in dysphagia teaching and in sleep-disordered breathing discussions, where reduced palatal and tongue tone can contribute to retropalatal and retroglossal collapse, and it also matters during tonsillectomy because the palatoglossal arch marks the anterior limit of the tonsillar fossa and guides dissection planes.
