Description
Running from the inferior border of the mandible to the superficial fascia over the clavicle and upper anterior thorax, the platysma forms a thin, sheetlike layer on the anterolateral neck in lateral profile. Its fibers lie superficial to the sternocleidomastoid, draping across the cervical region anterior to the ear and mastoid area while remaining separated from the deeper strap muscles by the investing cervical fascia. Posteriorly the auricle and lateral skull contour define the superior extent, and inferiorly the clavicle, upper ribs, and scapular outline provide bony reference for its caudal spread. Superficial. By design. Because the platysma inserts into skin and blends with the superficial musculoaponeurotic system, this view clarifies why platysmal banding and transverse cervical rhytids become more apparent with facial animation, aging, or after weight loss in male necks. Surgeons planning a cervical rhytidectomy, submental lipectomy, or platysmaplasty need a clean mental map of where platysma sits relative to the sternocleidomastoid and mandible so they can address medial band dehiscence without drifting laterally into the great auricular nerve territory. It also supports teaching of the superficial cervical fascia as a true surgical plane rather than a vague concept. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy coursework to anchor discussions of superficial muscles, fascial planes, and skin creases, or in operative atlases and patient education materials for neck lift and lower face procedures.
