Description
Centered in the popliteal fossa, the popliteal artery is shown coursing vertically deep to the fascial roof of the posterior knee, continuing from the femoral artery after it passes through the adductor hiatus. Superficial to the vessel lie the tibial nerve and popliteal vein, while the boundaries of the diamond are formed superiorly by semimembranosus and semitendinosus medially and biceps femoris laterally, and inferiorly by the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius. Distally, the artery approaches the inferior border of popliteus where it divides into the anterior tibial artery and the tibioperoneal trunk. A deep, central target. Posterior exposure matters because the popliteal artery sits fixed against the posterior capsule and femur, making it susceptible in posterior knee dislocations and in fractures around the distal femur or proximal tibia, where limb ischemia can be missed if collateral flow masks a weak pulse. This view also frames the typical relationship of artery, vein, and tibial nerve that guides safe dissection and explains why popliteal aneurysms often present with compressive neuropathy or deep venous thrombosis. Palpation and Doppler assessment at this level are common, but surgical control demands exact appreciation of depth and adjacent muscular borders.
