Description

Pubic crest anatomy anchors the anterior midline of the bony pelvis, spanning the superior border of the body of the pubis between the pubic tubercle laterally and the symphysis pubis medially. From this anterior perspective, the left and right pubic bones meet at the fibrocartilaginous interpubic disc, while the superior pubic rami extend superolaterally toward the acetabular regions of the hip bones. Just superior and lateral to the crest, the pecten pubis (pectineal line) continues onto the ilium as the arcuate line, marking part of the pelvic brim. Short and palpable. Clinically, the pubic crest and adjacent pubic tubercle are surface landmarks for the inguinal region, where the inguinal ligament attaches and where clinicians estimate the superficial inguinal ring during evaluation of inguinal hernia. Orthopaedic and sports medicine audiences also look here for pain generators at the pubic symphysis, including osteitis pubis and symphyseal instability, and for anterior pelvic ring fracture patterns that often involve the superior pubic ramus and parasymphyseal bone. The anterior viewpoint makes it easier to teach midline alignment and compare bilateral symmetry of the pelvic girdle without distraction from posterior sacroiliac structures. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal anatomy courses to orient students to the pubis within the human pelvic skeleton, and in surgical education materials discussing open and laparoscopic hernia repair landmarks. It also suits radiology and trauma publications as a bony reference when correlating pelvic inlet landmarks and anterior ring injuries.
