Sigmoid Veins, Anterior View

Description

Anterior orientation frames the distal large intestine, with the sigmoid colon looping inferomedially toward the rectum while the descending colon courses superiorly and laterally along the left flank. Blue venous channels trace the sigmoid veins within the sigmoid mesocolon, their tributaries converging proximally toward the inferior mesenteric vein as they run alongside the colic wall and between the haustra and appendices epiploicae. Proximal colonic segments remain visible as context, including transverse and ascending colon, but the venous emphasis stays on the left lower quadrant drainage pathway. Clear depiction of the sigmoid venous network matters when you are teaching hindgut portal drainage and when you are planning or interpreting left-sided colonic surgery. During sigmoid colectomy and low anterior resection, division of the inferior mesenteric vein near the inferior border of the pancreas changes venous outflow patterns and can complicate mesenteric dissection if the sigmoid tributaries are not anticipated. Portal hypertensive colopathy and mesenteric venous thrombosis also preferentially affect these thin-walled channels, and correlating their course with the mesocolon helps explain segmental congestion and ischemic risk. Good landmarks.
