Description
Shown from a lateral perspective in an adult male, the suprascapular vein is traced along the superior border of the scapula near the suprascapular notch, coursing deep to the clavicle and toward the root of the neck. Along its path it relates closely to the suprascapular artery and the superior transverse scapular ligament at the notch, then continues medially toward venous drainage into the external jugular system or via the subclavian vein depending on anatomic variation. Surrounding bony landmarks include the clavicle, acromion, coracoid process, and the scapular spine, with the proximal humerus positioned inferior and lateral to the suprascapular region. A lateral view clarifies relationships that are easy to lose in anterior chest wall diagrams, especially the way the suprascapular vessels traverse the suprascapular notch beneath the clavicle and over the superior aspect of the scapula. That relationship matters during suprascapular nerve entrapment at the notch, where arthroscopic or open decompression aims to release the superior transverse scapular ligament while avoiding iatrogenic injury to the suprascapular artery and accompanying veins. Bleeding here can be brisk and obscures the field. This angle also supports teaching of the scapular anastomoses and venous return pathways that become relevant when subclavian or axillary venous outflow is compromised.
