Description
Arising from the pia mater along the roof of the third ventricle, the tela choroidea forms a thin, vascular lamina that lies inferior to the corpus callosum and body of the fornix and superior to the thalamic surfaces that frame the ventricular cavity. From a posteriorly oriented, mid-sagittal perspective, the illustrated ventricular system in blue logically includes the third ventricle continuing caudally into the cerebral aqueduct and fourth ventricle, with the cerebellum and brainstem (midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata) positioned inferiorly. Gyri and sulci of the cerebral hemispheres remain visible as external landmarks, while the tela choroidea is emphasized as a meningeal fold rather than a parenchymal structure. A delicate membrane, not a mass. This relationship matters when teaching why the choroid plexus sits where it does and how cerebrospinal fluid enters the ventricular system, because the choroid plexus of the third ventricle develops from invagination of the tela choroidea into the ependymal-lined cavity. Posterior orientation also helps clarify how lesions at the roof of the third ventricle can obstruct CSF pathways upstream of the cerebral aqueduct, a practical setup for discussing non-communicating hydrocephalus and the rationale for endoscopic third ventriculostomy. For neurosurgical anatomy, the tela choroidea and its proximity to the internal cerebral veins in the velum interpositum provides a clean conceptual bridge to transventricular and interforniceal corridors.
