Description
Posterior arm anatomy is rendered with the triceps brachii dominating the dorsal compartment, its long head arising from the infraglenoid tubercle and lying medially, while the lateral head sits superolateral on the humerus and the medial head emerges deep and distal between them. Distally, all three heads converge into a broad common tendon that courses centrally over the posterior elbow to insert on the olecranon of the ulna. Adjacent landmarks you would expect in this projection include the posterior deltoid superiorly, the posterior border of the humerus, and the superficial fascia over the cubital region, with the forearm extensor mass continuing inferiorly toward the wrist. Posterior presentation makes tendon geometry and head-to-tendon continuity easy to teach, but it also mirrors what surgeons and proceduralists care about at the back of the elbow. The triceps tendon and its insertional footprint matter in distal triceps ruptures after a fall on an outstretched hand, and in operative repair where suture anchor placement or transosseous tunnels must respect the olecranon and the nearby ulnar nerve as it passes posterior to the medial epicondyle. Palpation and injection anatomy benefit too, because swelling from olecranon bursitis and posterior elbow trauma can obscure the tendon margins. A clean posterior silhouette helps.
