Description
Spanning from the scalp to the plantar venous arch, the female systemic venous network is rendered in blue with the heart centered in the thorax. Superficial channels such as the external jugular, cephalic, basilic, and great and small saphenous veins course superficially, while deeper trunks, including the internal jugular veins, brachiocephalic veins, superior and inferior venae cavae, and the femoral, popliteal, and tibial veins, track alongside their companion arteries. Proximally, the subclavian veins pass beneath the clavicles to join the internal jugular veins, then drain medially into the right atrium. Deep to the abdominal wall, the hepatic veins converge superiorly into the inferior vena cava, and the renal and common iliac veins enter more caudally. For teaching venous return, a whole-body map matters because it clarifies where flow converges and where collateral pathways can compensate when a major conduit fails. Central venous catheter placement and its complications make more sense when you can relate the internal jugular and subclavian approaches to the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava. Venous disease is patterned. Lower limb deep vein thrombosis in the femoral or popliteal segments, and superficial thrombophlebitis tracking along the great saphenous vein toward the saphenofemoral junction, both depend on these anatomic routes. Use this figure in gross anatomy and cardiovascular physiology courses, in nursing and paramedic curricula covering venipuncture and central access, and in patient-facing education on varicose veins, DVT risk, and pulmonary embolism pathways.
