Description
Frontal anatomy of a male head and neck centers on the zygomatico-orbital artery as it courses over the lateral cheek, tracking superiorly along the zygoma (malar bone) toward the lateral orbital rim. Deep to the superficial facial vessels, the artery is positioned lateral to the maxilla and inferior to the orbit, with its ascent paralleling the zygomatic arch before approaching the periorbital arterial network. Surrounding landmarks include the orbital apertures, nasal aperture, maxillary dentition, and the anterior cervical spine, while the common and internal carotid arteries rise in the neck with the internal jugular veins descending laterally. Small vessel. Big consequences. Because the zygomatico-orbital artery represents a variable anastomotic channel between facial and orbital circulations, this anterior perspective helps clarify how perfusion can reach the lateral canthus and zygomatic region through branches of the superficial temporal system (via the transverse facial artery) and connections with the lacrimal and other orbital arteries. That relationship matters in periorbital and midface surgery, where dissection near the lateral orbital rim and zygomatic prominence, or placement of incisions for blepharoplasty and zygomatic approaches, can encounter these vessels and produce brisk bleeding or postoperative hematoma. It also supports teaching of collateral pathways relevant to embolization planning for epistaxis or facial vascular lesions, where inadvertent orbital supply is a known hazard.
