Description
Centered on the right upper quadrant, the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) sits on the visceral (inferior) surface of the liver in the gallbladder fossa, typically between the right and quadrate lobes. A sequential reveal traces the fundus projecting inferior to the liver margin, the body tapering into the infundibulum, and the cystic duct coursing posteromedially to join the common hepatic duct and form the common bile duct. Proximal branches of the biliary tree appear at the porta hepatis, with right and left hepatic ducts converging, while the common bile duct descends in the hepatoduodenal ligament anterior to the portal vein and alongside the proper hepatic artery. Orientation stays anatomic. The extrahepatic ductal network reads clearly. Clinical relevance is immediate: most gallstones lodge in the gallbladder neck or cystic duct, and acute cholecystitis often follows when outflow is blocked and the gallbladder wall becomes inflamed. Tracking bile from the hepatic ducts into the common bile duct, then toward the pancreatic head and the ampulla of Vater, clarifies why choledocholithiasis can produce obstructive jaundice and why a stone at the distal duct may also trigger gallstone pancreatitis by impeding flow at the sphincter of Oddi. Motion helps here, because the animated progression can map duct continuity and junctions that are easy to misread in a single frame, including the variable angle at which the cystic duct inserts and the segment relationships that matter during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Calot’s triangle becomes easier to conceptualize when the cystic duct is followed into its confluence.
