Description
Rendered in an X-ray, radiographic-style perspective, the gallbladder sits on the visceral (inferior) surface of the right lobe of the liver, with its fundus projecting anteriorly and inferiorly toward the right costal margin and its neck turning posteromedially to become the cystic duct. As the sequence progresses, the cystic duct is tracked to its junction with the common hepatic duct, forming the common bile duct that descends inferiorly toward the second part of the duodenum, while the right and left hepatic ducts converge superiorly at the porta hepatis. Subtle changes in camera angle and depth cues help separate the extrahepatic biliary tree from the adjacent hepatic parenchyma. Landmarks stay clear. Clinical relevance is immediate: gallstones commonly lodge at the gallbladder neck or cystic duct, producing biliary colic, and inflammation can distort Calot’s triangle and increase risk to the common hepatic duct during cholecystectomy. The radiographic treatment parallels what clinicians interpret on fluoroscopy during ERCP, where the cystic duct insertion, common bile duct caliber, and proximal hepatic duct confluence are judged quickly, and where overlap can mask strictures or filling defects. Watching the ducts appear in sequence makes spatial relationships easier to retain than a single labeled frame, so you can mentally map how an obstructing stone upstream affects the intrahepatic ducts versus the distal common bile duct.
