Description
Centered in the anterior superior mediastinum, the thymus appears as paired right and left lobes joined across the midline, draped posterior to the manubrium and medial ends of the clavicles. Radiographic rendering emphasizes the lobulated contour and internal septation pattern, with the gland tapering inferiorly toward the level of the second to fourth costal cartilages and lying anterior to the pericardium and great vessels. Over the course of the animation, contrast and opacity shift to bring the thymic outline into and out of prominence, separating the lobes from adjacent thoracic soft tissue as if in a guided x-ray read. Thymic morphology matters because it is a frequent source of diagnostic confusion on chest radiography and CT, where normal residual thymus, thymic hyperplasia, thymoma, and lymphoma can overlap in appearance. The sequential radiographic treatment helps you appreciate how subtle changes in density and border definition alter perceived mediastinal contours, a common issue when evaluating an anterior mediastinal mass in a woman with symptoms such as ptosis or fatigable weakness suggestive of myasthenia gravis. Fatty involution and asymmetry between left and right lobes are also easier to teach when the gland is progressively revealed rather than presented as a single static frame.
