Description
Beginning in the anterior superior mediastinum, the thymus is rendered as paired right and left lobes lying immediately posterior to the manubrium and body of the sternum and anterior to the fibrous pericardium. As the animation progresses, the lobes are separated along the midline and their contours are traced as they taper superiorly toward the root of the neck and expand inferiorly over the pericardial reflection. Deep to the gland, the aortic arch is introduced as a posterior landmark, with the thymic mass draped anteriorly across the arch region and adjacent great-vessel corridor. Orientation stays strictly anatomical. Clinically, these relationships explain both common imaging findings and operative risk. A thymic remnant or hyperplasia can mimic an anterior mediastinal mass on CT, while thymoma often sits in the same retrosternal compartment and may coexist with myasthenia gravis, so surgeons plan a thymectomy with constant attention to the pericardium and the nearby great vessels around the arch. Motion helps here: seeing the gland’s lobes peel away from the pericardial surface and then re-approximate clarifies the tissue planes that are hard to infer from a single frame, and it reinforces why bleeding control becomes challenging near the brachiocephalic vein and arch branches when the dissection strays posteriorly.
