Description

Centered in the anterior superior mediastinum, the thymus appears as a bilobed gland with right and left lobes separated by a thin connective tissue septum and joined across the midline by a variable isthmus. During the animation, the organ is oriented relative to the manubrium and upper body of the sternum anteriorly, the brachiocephalic veins and superior vena cava posteriorly, and the pericardium and arch of the aorta deep to its inferior border. As the sequence progresses, the lobes are mapped superiorly toward the inferior poles of the thyroid gland in the root of the neck and laterally toward the mediastinal pleura, emphasizing how its contour can project on frontal chest radiographs. Location matters. On radiography and CT, residual thymic tissue or physiologic thymic rebound can mimic an anterior mediastinal mass, and the animation’s stepwise spatial referencing to the great vessels helps you differentiate normal thymic morphology from thymoma, lymphoma, or germ cell tumor in the classic anterior mediastinal differential. The bilobed form, frequent asymmetry between left and right lobes, and the gland’s tendency to involute with age are easier to appreciate when you watch its margins relate dynamically to the sternum, pericardium, and venous confluence rather than trying to infer depth from a single frame.
