Description
Zooming in on the epicardial surface of the male heart, the animation tracks the right and left coronary arteries emerging from the aortic root and spreading across the muscular myocardium beneath a thin layer of visceral pericardium. The right coronary artery courses inferiorly in the right atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus toward the acute margin, sending right marginal branches laterally over the right ventricle. On the left, the short left coronary trunk divides into the anterior interventricular branch (left anterior descending) descending toward the apex in the anterior interventricular sulcus, and the circumflex artery sweeping laterally and posteriorly in the left atrioventricular sulcus with obtuse marginal branches. Surface texture matters here. Epicardial fat pads intermittently obscure segments of vessel, a realistic relationship that becomes clearer as the sequence progresses.
