Description
Beginning at the mandibular foramen on the medial surface of the ramus, the inferior alveolar nerve enters the mandibular canal deep to the lingula and proceeds anteriorly within the body of the mandible, inferior to the apices of the posterior tooth roots. As the sequence advances, the nerve is tracked in close company with the inferior alveolar artery and vein, coursing within dense cortical and cancellous bone toward the premolar region. Near the mental foramen on the anterolateral mandible, the animation follows its bifurcation into the mental nerve exiting laterally and the incisive branch continuing forward within the incisive canal. Spatial relationships stay clear: the canal sits medial to the buccal cortical plate and superior to the inferior border of the mandible. Dental anesthesia and mandibular surgery depend on this path. Misjudging the position of the mandibular foramen or the canal explains incomplete inferior alveolar nerve blocks, while injury along the canal or at the mental foramen produces classic lower lip and chin paresthesia after third molar extraction, implant osteotomy, or sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Motion adds clarity here, because you can watch the nerve’s trajectory relative to changing mandibular thickness from ramus to body, and appreciate why canal position varies with alveolar height loss and remodeling. It also frames the nearby mylohyoid nerve branch given off just before canal entry, a frequent reason for residual molar sensation after an otherwise well-placed block. A critical landmark.
