Presented in cross-section, the penile shaft is shown from superficial to deep, beginning with skin and subcutaneous fascia and progressing to the erectile bodies. Paired corpora cavernosa lie dorsolaterally, each enclosed by a dense tunica albuginea, while the corpus spongiosum sits ventrally in the midline and surrounds the urethral lumen. Small arteries and arterioles supplying the erectile tissue are rendered in profile, allowing the tunica intima (tunica interna) with its endothelial lining to be distinguished from the thicker tunica media and the outer tunica adventitia. Arterial wall layering matters in the penis because erection depends on rapid arterial inflow and restricted venous outflow within the cavernous spaces.
