Concentric arterial wall layers are rendered in cross-section, progressing from the endothelial tunica intima at the luminal surface through the internal elastic lamina into the smooth muscle rich tunica media, then outward to the collagenous tunica externa (adventitia) that blends with surrounding connective tissue. Elastic lamellae are suggested within the media, while vasa vasorum and small accompanying nerves logically occupy the outer adventitia in larger caliber vessels. Orientation runs from the central lumen outward. Clean stratification. That layered architecture underpins most of what clinicians interpret in vascular disease: intimal injury and lipid deposition begin the atherosclerotic plaque, medial smooth muscle drives vasoconstriction and remodeling, and a weakened media predisposes to aneurysm formation and dissection when blood tracks between lamellae after an intimal tear. The relative thickness of the tunica media also separates artery from vein in histology, and it is the feature that distinguishes a muscular artery from an arteriole where one to two smooth muscle layers dominate the wall. Wall layers matter during catheterization and endarterectomy, when staying in the correct plane reduces perforation and thrombosis. Faculty can drop this into cardiovascular histology and pathology teaching to anchor terminology (tunica intima, media, externa) before moving to H and E slides, elastin stains, and ultrasound correlates like increased intima media thickness. It also reads well in vascular surgery and interventional radiology materials explaining why dissections propagate and why arterioles control peripheral resistance.
