Description
Concentric layers of an arterial wall are presented in transverse section, with a central lumen bordered by tunica intima (endothelium with subendothelial connective tissue) and an internal elastic lamina forming a sharp interface with the tunica media. Surrounding this, the tunica media appears as a thicker circumferential smooth muscle layer, bounded externally by an external elastic lamina where present. Peripheral to the media, the tunica adventitia forms the outer collar of connective tissue, blending with perivascular tissue and, in larger-caliber arteries, accommodating vasa vasorum and autonomic nerve fibers. Proximal-to-distal caliber changes are implied by the keyword arteriole, where the media simplifies to one or two smooth muscle layers and elastic laminae become less conspicuous. Layer recognition matters in vascular pathology because most clinically relevant lesions respect these boundaries. Atherosclerotic plaque originates in the intima, expands toward the lumen, and can destabilize at the fibrous cap, while hypertensive arteriolosclerosis thickens the wall and narrows the lumen in small vessels, a common substrate for lacunar infarcts and chronic kidney disease. The media-adventitia interface also guides procedural thinking, from endarterectomy planes to catheter and guidewire behavior during angiography and stent deployment. Small differences, big consequences. Use this asset in histology and cardiovascular anatomy teaching to anchor light microscopy findings to macroscopic organization, or in pathology texts to clarify where dissection, aneurysm formation, and plaque development occur within the vessel wall.
