Description
Spanning the dorsum of the left hand, the superficial dorsal venous network courses over the metacarpals and phalanges, with digital veins draining proximally into prominent dorsal metacarpal veins. Lateral (radial) channels converge toward the region of the anatomic snuffbox, while medial (ulnar) channels collect along the dorsoulnar hand before continuing toward the dorsal venous arch near the wrist. Beneath the venous overlay, the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges provide bony landmarks, including the metacarpophalangeal “knuckles” and the interphalangeal joints aligned distally along each digit. Dorsal hand veins are common access points for peripheral IV cannulation, and this view helps you anticipate the course and branching variability that can make cannulation succeed or fail. Relationship to the anatomic snuffbox matters: superficial veins here may cross near the cephalic vein origin, while deeper structures include the radial artery, a frequent hazard in poorly chosen puncture sites. Small branches overlying metacarpal shafts also become clinically relevant in dorsal hand trauma, edema, or after surgery, where superficial thrombophlebitis and extravasation can compromise thin dorsal soft tissues.
