Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the male skull and cervical vertebral column are presented with the cranial sutures, maxilla, mandible, and the occiput articulating with the atlas (C1) at the atlanto-occipital joints. Inferior to C1, the axis (C2) and the remaining cervical vertebrae (C3 to C7) align along the physiologic cervical lordosis, with intervertebral discs separating the vertebral bodies from C2–C3 through C7–T1. Between adjacent transverse processes, slender fibrous bands represent the intertransverse ligaments, placed lateral to the vertebral bodies and deep to where the prevertebral fascia would be encountered in dissection. A lateral view is the working angle for understanding cervical stability and motion, because it clarifies the relationship between discs, facet alignment, and the ligamentous restraints that limit excessive side-bending. In the cervical region, intertransverse tissues are often discussed in the context of whiplash-associated disorders and lateral flexion injuries, where strain can coexist with facet joint irritation and paraspinal muscle spasm. This perspective also supports surgical and procedural teaching, since the transverse processes and their connecting soft tissues define the corridor near the vertebral artery and cervical nerve roots during lateral neck approaches and landmark-based injections.
