Description
Obliquely oriented on the lateral chest wall, the female mammary gland is shown superficial to pectoralis major, with lobulated glandular tissue and adipose compartments separated by fibrous septa (suspensory ligaments) that tether the parenchyma toward the overlying skin. Laterally, a network of venules and larger superficial veins courses from the outer quadrants toward the axillary region, running parallel to the lateral contour of the breast and skirting the inferolateral margin of the gland. Deep to the parenchyma, the pectoral fascia creates the retromammary plane, while the ductal tree converges anteriorly toward the nipple-areolar complex. Small vessels bridge between superficial and deeper planes. Clear relationships. Emphasis on the lateral venous drainage matters because this territory is where axillary outflow and superficial collateral pathways intersect, a point that becomes clinically visible as distended superficial veins in lactation, inflammation, or venous obstruction. Surgical work in the outer quadrants, including lumpectomy and axillary tail (of Spence) dissection, routinely encounters these tributaries, and their injury can complicate hemostasis and obscure tissue planes. For teaching, the lateral breast is also the region most often sampled in clinical breast examination and imaging correlation, so appreciating venous patterns helps explain surface markings and bruising distribution after trauma or biopsy.
