Description
Prominent lateral mammary veins course within the superficial fascia of the female breast, running along the lateral aspect of the glandular and adipose tissue before tracking toward the axillary region. Superficial venules form a branching network over the lobular parenchyma and converge into larger-caliber veins as they pass lateral to the areola and nipple complex. Deep to the breast, the pectoralis major muscle provides the posterior bed of the gland, with venous channels shown in relation to the anterior thoracic wall. Blue venous pathways are contrasted against the pale glandular tissue and the yellow fat compartments. Venous anatomy on the lateral breast matters when you are planning incisions, flap elevation, or implant pocket dissection, because disruption of these superficial channels can drive postoperative ecchymosis and hematoma formation along the lateral pole and axillary tail (of Spence).
