Description
Focused on the lateral half of the female mammary gland, the venous network is traced from small venules within the lobules through progressively larger lateral veins coursing through the adipose and glandular tissue toward the axillary side. Branches run superficially beneath the skin and deeper along the fibroglandular stroma, with perforating tributaries crossing Cooper’s ligaments to connect planes. Medially, ducts converge toward the nipple and areola, while posteriorly the gland rests on the pectoralis major fascia over the anterior chest wall. Blue-caliber vessels emphasize the pattern and confluence points rather than arterial supply. Lateral breast veins matter because they map the principal low-pressure drainage routes that communicate with the axillary venous system and, variably, with the lateral thoracic and thoracoepigastric pathways. Surgeons planning a lateral approach for lumpectomy, axillary tail dissection, or reduction mammaplasty watch these channels to limit bleeding and hematoma, and to preserve superficial drainage that can worsen postoperative edema when disrupted.
