Description
Circumferentially around the central lumen, the mucosa of the small intestine forms the innermost lining, with the simple columnar epithelium and lamina propria arranged superficial to a thin muscularis mucosae. External to this sits the submucosa as a thicker connective tissue band, then the muscularis externa with an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer. A delicate serosa outlines the outer surface. Red and blue channels track through the submucosa and toward the mucosa, while yellow neural elements lie between the muscle layers and in the submucosa, consistent with the myenteric (Auerbach) and submucosal (Meissner) plexuses. Emphasis on the mucosa matters because this is where absorption, barrier function, and most inflammatory pathology declare themselves. Celiac disease targets the villous architecture and epithelial surface, with villous blunting and crypt hyperplasia that explain malabsorption and weight loss, and the close relationship of mucosa to submucosal vessels clarifies why active inflammation can present with edema and bleeding.
