Description
Mucosa of the small intestine is presented in cross-section, with the lumen bordered by simple columnar epithelium and its brush border, thrown into fingerlike villi and interrupted by deep epithelial invaginations forming the crypts of Lieberkuhn. Lamina propria occupies the core of each villus and extends between crypts, while the muscularis mucosae defines the inferior boundary of the mucosal layer before the submucosa begins. Goblet cells punctuate the epithelial lining, increasing in density distally along the enteron. Orientation is mucosa to lumen on the superficial aspect, and muscularis mucosae on the deep aspect. For teaching absorption and secretion, this view does the work. The villus-crypt axis explains why coeliac disease causes blunting of villi with crypt hyperplasia and malabsorption, while infectious enteritis and chemotherapy-related mucositis often target the rapidly dividing crypt epithelium. Crypt anatomy also underpins the pattern of adenomatous change and early carcinoma arising from dysplastic glandular epithelium, and it frames how mucosal biopsies are graded in pathology.
