Red arterial and blue venous channels track longitudinally in the wall and give off smaller branches toward the villus core, and yellow nerve elements course in the submucosa and between the muscle layers where the myenteric (Auerbach) plexus resides. Color coding keeps the membrane, gut wall layers, and neurovascular pathways distinct. For teaching absorption, this morphology is the point. The epithelium overlying villi and the glandular epithelium within crypts explain why villus blunting in celiac disease reduces absorptive surface area, while crypt hyperplasia shifts the balance toward secretion and regeneration.
