Description
Rendered from a lateral head and neck angle in an adult male, the venous drainage is traced from the scalp and face into the major cervical channels. Superficial veins converge on the external jugular vein as it descends in the superficial fascia, crossing obliquely over the sternocleidomastoid toward the subclavian vein inferiorly. Deeper and more medial, the internal jugular vein runs within the carotid sheath, typically lateral to the common carotid artery and anterior to the vagus nerve, receiving tributaries from the face and cranial cavity via the facial vein and the dural venous sinuses. Color coding distinguishes arteries from veins to clarify the close arterial and venous pairing in the neck. Separation of the internal and external jugular systems matters when you are teaching venous return from the brain versus the face and scalp, and when you are planning access or interpreting swelling patterns. Internal jugular cannulation relies on anticipating its relationship to the carotid artery and sternocleidomastoid heads, while external jugular distension can be an immediately visible bedside sign of elevated right atrial pressure or superior vena cava obstruction. Landmarks stay consistent. The superficial to deep contrast in this view makes collateral pathways and anatomic variants easier to discuss.
