Description
Centered on the lower limb, the fibula (calfbone) is presented as the slender lateral bone of the leg, running parallel to the tibia from the fibular head just inferior and lateral to the knee to the lateral malleolus at the ankle. Proximally, the head and neck sit posterolateral to the tibial condyles and articulate at the proximal tibiofibular joint, while the long shaft descends along the lateral compartment. Distally, the lateral malleolus extends inferior to the tibial plafond, framing the lateral aspect of the talocrural mortise. Surrounding osseous landmarks are visible in context within a full female skeleton, including pelvis, femur, tibia, tarsals, and metatarsals. Orientation is clear. Clinical teaching often benefits from seeing the fibula in situ because it is not a primary weight-bearing bone yet it forms key attachment sites and stabilizers for the ankle. The fibular neck is a classic hazard zone, where fractures can injure the common fibular (peroneal) nerve, producing foot drop and sensory loss over the dorsum of the foot. Distally, the relationship between the fibula and tibia at the syndesmosis matters in Weber and Maisonneuve patterns, where apparent ankle trauma can mask a proximal fibular fracture and require different fixation strategy. A small bone, big consequences.
